Chinatown’s Hing Shing Pastry quietly closes

Despite a lack of media coverage, it turns out that Chinatown’s Hing Shing Pastry store has recently closed down permanently. Perhaps one of the reasons for its quiet closure is due to its lack of social media presence. With this in mind, it also shows the closure of an old-school business that was around before the days of Instagram and other platforms.

The closure was confirmed by a Bostonian on Twitter, who wrote this: “Ringing in the Mid Autumn Festival with my last ever snack from Chinatown stalwart Hing Shing Pastry, which closes for good this weekend.”

According to one local, the closure was due to personal reasons. More specifically, it was because the owners decided to retire with no family members willing to take over. This was mentioned in a Reddit thread where one user wrote: “The owners are retiring and none of their children or grandchildren are interested in continuing the business. This is one of my favorite places too. They make some pastries that other bakeries don’t make or aren’t as good. There was also a rumor that Ho Yuen Bakery would be closing this year but that has not been confirmed.”

Since then, the property has been photographed and is clearly vacant, indicating that a new occupant could move in at some point. Over the years, Hing Shing Pastry earned stellar reviews online. Clearly, this part of Boston’s historical Chinatown will be missed by many.
