Spencer Cox criticized over religious comments during speech

Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox was criticized earlier for bringing religion into local politics. This took place during a Faith Matters Conference speech that he gave during the week. Here, he took to Twitter to write: ‘Great to be at the Faith Matters Conference today with Judge Thomas Griffith to discuss our #DisagreeBetter initiative and what role people — religious and nonreligious — can play in healing our nation.’ The full tweet can be seen in more detail below.’

Not only this but he also gave three tips to decrease depolarization. As you can imagine, whenever a politician combines religion with politics this will always spark debate. And this is exactly what happened in his comments.

Here, one user replied saying: “Three things you can do to decrease depolarization:1) don’t allow our districts to be gerrymandered, 2) keep the legislature out of my medical decisions, 3) stop allowing religion to be involved with making the laws.”

Elsewhere, another user wrote a very blunt response as they quipped: “Keep the church out of politics.”

Interestingly, Cox’s current Utah term is due to end in 2025. Based on these comments he clearly has some critics within the state. However, it will be interesting to see if these are a vocal minority or whether they’re representative of a growing number of annoyed constituents.
