Military helicopters seen in Albuquerque skies – But there’s a simple explanation

Yesterday, Albuquerque residents were treated to a surprise as an array of powerful military aircraft soared through the suburban skies. This was an unusual occurrence, and it’s natural to feel a sense of awe when such an unexpected event unfolds.

Specifically, these were Osprey’s flanking a C-130 and a few helicopters. As mentioned, these aren’t exactly common aerial vehicles to come across. Typically with Chinook helicopters, their distinctive roar is often heard before they come into view, as they are well-known for their substantial noise.

This sight was originally uploaded to Reddit by a confused user. Despite it being unusual, the reason for these military vehicles was explained by other users.

Here, one person explained that these were in the air as part of the recent hot air balloon display. Not only this, but it’s also due to a nearby military site. Specifically, they said: “Kirtland is a training base, so while this is for Balloon Fiesta it’s not uncommon to see a variety of maneuvers out of the base depending on what and who it getting trained.” When put like this, it makes a lot of sense. What’s even more impressive is the sheer cost of these vehicles, which would have a combined cost of well over $100 million.

All in all, it’s a fascinating spectacle and certainly not an everyday occurrence when you’re out and about in Albuquerque.
