Huge grocery store to open in Salt Lake City

The Pep Boys located at 700 East in Sugar House is set to close this Saturday, and strong indications suggest that Trader Joe’s will likely take its place.

A representative, apparently acting on behalf of the company, recently filed for a permit via a service specialized in expediting building permits. This permit unmistakably states their intention: “Transforming the location into a Trader Joe’s grocery store,” as detailed in the permit application for 2160 S. 700 E.

This revelation couldn’t be more straightforward, and it’s safe to assume that the company is not pleased that the information has become public. Trader Joe’s is notorious for maintaining secrecy regarding its new locations and typically prefers to control the announcement process. Speculation first arose when Planning Director Nick Norris posted a screenshot of the building permit on Twitter.

It’s worth noting that the Olsen family, owners of the building in question, also own Dee’s restaurant at the intersection of 2100 South and 700 East. Additionally, they possess the strip mall situated just west of 700 East within the same complex.

At this moment in time, it is not known when the new store will open. Sometimes with retail giants, it can take months or even years to put into fruition. This will not be the city’s first Trader Joe’s store either.
