Prized Dolphin mural covered by giant Lunchables advert

Detroit’s Broderick Tower has once again been covered by a large advert. After a month of the whales being on show, they have been replaced by a Lunchables Dunkables advert. Back in early September, the iconic whales returned after years of absence.

This is because a storm removed the smileys banner that covered them. Although many Detroit residents opposed the smileys, to the banner’s credit, they were at least done by a local advert. Unfortunately for many, the joy of seeing the original mural was short-lived as it has now been replaced by a food advert. Arguably, this is worse than the smiley and had no cultural connection to the city or area.

News of the current advert quickly broke on Twitter. Here, a local account wrote: ‘Everyone got so mad about the smiles by a local artist as part of a Rocket ad — and then there was the whole “free the whales” thing on the Broderick in Downtown Detroit. And now they just put up a regular ad for Dunkables.’

It is not known how long the current advert will stay in place for. Furthermore, it is not known whether the mural will return when it goes. Regardless, it clearly takes a lot of character out of the area and it may not be for a long while that the whales are revealed again.
