Janet Mills criticized over Maine high-speed internet comments

Recently, Maine Governor Janet Mills spoke about her goal to improve the state of the internet in the state. This included access, affordability, and high-speed internet. In an ambitious plan, she looked at implementing these goals by the end of next year. Speaking on Twitter, she wrote: “I’ve set a goal of ensuring that anyone in Maine who wants an internet connection can have one by the end of 2024. @MEConnectivity‘s newly-released Digital Equity Plan is a roadmap to access, affordability, and adoption of high-speed internet.”

Although this was meant to be good news, certain Maine residents used it to criticize Mills regarding the state of the internet.

Responding to the tweet, one user named Angela Jensen-wickham wrote: “Maybe you could work on getting electricity affordable for everyone. Some of us low-income people struggle when we get hit with a 200+ a month bill. My kids and I can survive without the internet. You need electricity to survive. Cmp is gouging us, take a step to fix that. Please.” While improving the state’s internet connection and costs, this user made a good point that it’s almost pointless if the electric prices keep rising.

Another user used the platform to critique the governor on other issues such as crime and said: “Why don’t you actually do something about High taxes, homelessness and all the violence that is occurring in Southern Maine rather than focusing on the internet? Our children can’t even go play in Deering Oaks Park without the risk of stepping on needles. Do your job!”
