A beloved Jamaica Plain restaurant with a nearly three-decade history has permanently closed its doors.

As reported by a member of the Friends of Boston’s Hidden Restaurants Facebook group (citing a Facebook post from Alberto Vasallo of El Mundo Boston), El Oriental de Cuba, located on Centre Street, has ceased its operations. A statement from the Garcia family published in an El Mundo article indicates that the space will soon be home to a fresh Mexican restaurant named Abuela’s Table, with the owner and Executive Chef of Tu y Yo in Somerville taking the helm.

A statement recently released by the restaurant wrote: “We would like to begin by thanking our dedicated employees for all their wonderful years of service and their loyalty. We would never have done it without you. Our most sincere gratitude to the community of Jamaica Plain, our patrons, friends, and family for all the love and patronage you have bestowed upon us.”

El Oriental de Cuba was renowned for its Cuban cuisine and had garnered numerous accolades over the years. Its menu featured signature dishes like the Cuban sandwich, paella, grilled skirt steak, fried pork chops, chicken fricassee, and braised oxtail.

The restaurant’s address, where Abuela’s Table will be located, is 416 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130. It had been open for 29 years before closing and had thousands of positive online reviews by an array of happy customers.
