A third Piggly Wiggly store is in development, and the potential Kroger acquisition of Albertsons might lead to a resurgence of The Pig.

If you ask individuals who grew up in the Southern United States about Piggly Wiggly, they’ll likely have anecdotes to share. Often referred to as “The Pig” by their mothers and grandmothers, this 107-year-old brand is credited with pioneering the modern self-service supermarket. The name can still be spotted on the facades of some older buildings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Piggly Wiggly is gradually reestablishing its presence in Texas, thanks to an independent grocer and the impending merger of Kroger and Albertsons, which are the two largest supermarket chains in the United States.

At its zenith in 1932, Piggly Wiggly operated a whopping 2,660 stores. Over time, it was divided and sold off regionally. In the 1960s, it underwent a resurgence through franchising. In 2003, Piggly Wiggly came under the ownership of C&S Wholesale Grocers, headquartered in Keene, New Hampshire, following Fleming Cos.’ bankruptcy. For a brief period, Piggly Wiggly’s headquarters were relocated from Memphis to Lewisville, where Fleming was based.

Presently, there are over 500 Piggly Wiggly stores spread across 18 states. These include 12 corporate stores owned by C&S, 156 franchised stores, and 355 licensed stores, according to a company spokesperson. C&S also possesses 11 Grand Union stores in New York and Vermont.

Kroger has not yet disclosed the specific 26 stores, but they have confirmed that all of them will be from Albertsons, which operates its eponymous stores as well as Tom Thumb and Market Street locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
