Oakland Restaurant enforces penalty for vomiters due to boozy brunch goers

In the lively Asian-inspired eatery known for its famous millionaire’s bacon, Kitchen Story in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, patrons will find a distinctive restroom notice. The sign humorously advises all enthusiasts of mimosas to consume them responsibly and be mindful of their limits. It also cautions that a $50 cleaning fee will be automatically added to their bill should they become ill in public areas. The message concludes with a cheerful emoji.

This warning was placed in the restaurant’s restrooms almost two years ago by owner Steven Choi, in response to a suggestion from his general manager, who had noticed similar signs in bars.

Other factors contributing to responsible consumption include the way bottomless mimosas are served and the time limits. Unlike many brunch spots that employ timed seatings to prevent excessive drinking and table turnover, Kitchen Story, being a smaller establishment, permits patrons to savor bottomless mimosas for a 60-minute duration. Servers deliver petite carafes of grapefruit- or peach-infused sparkling wine to tables, ensuring customers have drained them before replacing them with new ones.

To add to the mystery, it is not known how often this fine is implemented. Nonetheless, you would assume that brunchtime vomiting was fairly frequent if the rule was imposed in the first place.
