Midwest Mountaineering closes down for good

Yesterday, Midwest Mountaineering, situated in Minneapolis’ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, concluded its operations after a successful 53-year run. This was confirmed by its Facebook page which permanently says ‘closed’.

The store, situated at 309 Cedar Ave., ceased operations on October 9, as confirmed by one of its employees. Until that date, customers could take advantage of a substantial liquidation sale, with discounts ranging from 30% to 75%, commencing this Friday.

Founded by Rod Johnson, Midwest Mountaineering initially began its journey in 1970 within a kitchen space, eventually relocating to a Hennepin Avenue storefront in 1971. Subsequently, in 1976, it made its home on the West Bank, operating out of the historic 125-year-old building along Cedar Avenue ever since.

According to its official website, Johnson’s original vision for the business was primarily focused on climbing but eventually evolved into a comprehensive outdoor retail destination. The store features a wide array of products, including camping gear, climbing equipment, clothing, footwear, paddling gear, winter supplies, and Thrifty Outfitters, a section offering outdoor brand-name clothing at half the price.

It has been reported that the decision to close Midwest Mountaineering stems from a decline in sales during the current year. Factors contributing to this downturn include heightened competition from large chain stores and online retailers, increased operating expenses, and challenges in the hiring process.
