Iconic Charlotte Nightclub announces closure after 3 decades of business

October 8, 2023 by No Comments

A long-standing Charlotte nightlife establishment is set to shutter its doors in the near future. The Scorpio, an LGBTQIA+ nightclub that has been a fixture since 1968, will be undergoing a temporary closure starting next month. The decision to close is attributed to upcoming development projects in the vicinity.

This announcement was made on their Instagram account which read: “For over five decades, The Scorpio has stood as a beacon in the Charlotte LGBTIA+ community, offering a safe haven, job opportunities, and unforgettable entertainment.” As you may imagine, this post was met with lots of sadness and respect by members of the community who had attended the club over the years. The full statement can be seen below in greater detail.

The management team is currently in the process of scouting a new location. Throughout its existence, The Scorpio has enjoyed significant popularity among the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities in Charlotte and the neighboring areas, offering a variety of entertainment including drag performances, DJ sets, live music, and more. The club’s temporary closure is scheduled for November 1, with plans to potentially reopen in a different location in 2024.

Having said this, sometimes it’s easier said than done to re-open a new venue. Often, finding a new location takes months of research. After this, it can then take months to create a new venue.
