Popular Austin Coffee Shop Announces Closure

The Cherrywood neighborhood’s beloved Thunderbird Coffee, a longstanding Austin cafe, is set to close its doors later this year. Its final day of operation at its 2200 Manor Road location is scheduled for Sunday, December 17. The owner has cited challenges stemming from the pandemic as the primary reason for this decision. The announcement was made by the owner on Instagram.

The extended notice of closure has been provided to allow the cafe’s dedicated team ample time to secure alternative employment opportunities. Additionally, it affords patrons the opportunity to make a final visit to the cafe, which has been a cornerstone of the community. Thunderbird Coffee earned recognition as one of Austin’s pioneering establishments in the third-wave coffee movement, emphasizing the use of premium ingredients.

This establishment was renowned for its offerings of coffee and espresso crafted from beans sourced from local roasters, Wild Gift, and accompanied by a selection of delectable Quack’s pastries, breakfast tacos, sandwiches, and teas.

Thunderbird Coffee on Manor initially opened its doors in 2006 and was subsequently followed by the establishment of a second location in Brentwood, situated on West Koenig Lane. The owner later ventured into the biscuit sandwich realm with Chef Brian Batch, co-founding Bird Bird Biscuit in the same neighborhood in 2018. In 2021, they expanded their culinary pursuits by launching Love Supreme, a pizzeria, alongside the owner’s brother in the Blackland neighborhood. Finally, in 2021, the second Thunderbird location on West Koenig underwent a transformation, becoming a second Bird Bird Biscuit location.
