New Jersey City Cannabis Dispensary opens

October 7, 2023 by No Comments

Although cannabis retail sales were legalized in New Jersey in early 2022, the rollout of dispensaries across the state has been gradual. Recently, Jersey City saw the opening of its second dispensary, Downtown Flwr, situated at 141 Newark Avenue. While the shop quietly began its operations at the end of July, yesterday it had its official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the commencement of recreational sales.

In the lead-up to this event, the storefront remained concealed behind covered windows, but it has been selling medical cannabis while awaiting the necessary approvals to offer recreational products. Notably, Jersey City welcomed its first cannabis dispensary just a few weeks ago, namely RIPT Dispensary, located at 220 Broadway, which exclusively caters to medicinal cannabis customers. The announcement of its opening was shared on its official Instagram page.

Meanwhile, in Hoboken, none of the five permitted cannabis businesses have yet opened their doors. Legal disputes have ensnared two of these establishments, with Story Dispensary, slated for the first-floor retail space at 51-53 14th Street, facing legal challenges from neighbors within the building. Criticism has also arisen due to the involvement of several local officials in the deal, including Jaclyn Fulop, the spouse of Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Drew Nussbaum, who manages a superPAC for Mayor Fulop, and state Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, who represents Hoboken.
