Dallas Police criticized after checking passenger quota before HOV lane

Yesterday, dash cam footage went viral after it showed Dallas police stopping vehicles and checking that they met the quota before using the HOV lane. The footage was originally uploaded to Reddit and prompted quite a discussion. Here, over 360 people commented with many of them lambasting the police force due to what was perceived as a waste of time (and not fighting real crimes).

Reacting, to the incident, one user wrote: “Glad they’re making sure the cars on the highway have the correct number of people in it, even though they don’t have the manpower to respond to burglary calls. This is definitely the bargain I expected to be paying taxes to law enforcement for.” This was the top comment in the thread and in case you didn’t realize it, it was written with a sarcastic tone.

The HOV lane, which stands for “High-Occupancy Vehicle” lane, is a designated lane on many highways and roads that is reserved for vehicles carrying a certain number of passengers. The purpose of HOV lanes is to encourage carpooling and reduce traffic congestion by providing a faster and more efficient travel option for vehicles with multiple occupants.

HOV lanes are often marked with special signs and painted lines on the road to indicate their use. Violating the rules of an HOV lane, such as driving in one with too few occupants, can result in fines and penalties.
