Free Parking ‘disappears’ from Midtown overnight

Free parking is gradually dwindling in availability throughout Nashville. The City of Nashville is poised to introduce paid parking to over a dozen downtown streets in the near future. While some locations won’t feature traditional parking meters, they will implement QR code signs for convenient payment and parking.

Residential inhabitants of these streets will receive exemptions from the paid parking meters but will need to obtain permits. The neighborhoods primarily affected by these changes appear to be Midtown, The Gulch, and Sobro in the downtown area.

Speaking of Midtown, a Reddit user recently claimed that the free parking had gone from the area overnight. Here, they wrote: “So apparently all the free street parking left in Midtown (along 18th ave & surrounding areas) has been turned into pay parking pretty much overnight? I’ve only lived here a year so I’m sure this is a phenomenon people are used to, but it makes me so upset. Is this administered by the city or who?”

Anticipating an approximate revenue of $1.2 million from the new paid parking initiative, the city is set to exceed its 2021 revenue by an additional $500,000. Furthermore, the Nashville Department of Transportation is planning to eliminate all coin-operated meters this year and increase the recruitment of additional parking meter attendants to ensure continuous street monitoring around the clock.
