After half a century, Mel is no longer found working behind the counter at Mel’s Hot Dogs.

Back in 1973, Mel Lohn established his renowned hot dog eatery at 4136 E Busch Blvd, and recently, he put the business on the market, seeking someone willing to continue his storied tradition. Although the complete details of the sale remain undisclosed, Hillsborough County records indicate that the property was acquired by HD Holding Company LLC for $435,000 on September 7.

While the core menu of delicious hot dogs is expected to remain unchanged, a representative from Mel’s has disclosed that a few minor adjustments are in the pipeline. These include an expanded beer selection, the introduction of ice cream options, and revised operating hours that now include Sundays.

Renowned for its Chicago-style hot dogs, delectable hot Italian beef sandwiches, and the display of photographs featuring people from all corners of the globe donning “Sit. Stay. Good Dog.” t-shirts, Mel’s has been a beloved fixture for generations of Tampa residents and visitors, especially those heading to or from nearby Busch Gardens.

First founded in 1973, Mel has owned the restaurant for several decades and as a result, it has earned beloved status within the Tampa community. With this being said, it will feel weird when it re-opens with completely new owners.
