Corporate mural divides Philly locals

Arguably, the point of a mural is to act as a piece of art that can be interpreted by those who view it. Typically, these can relate to a local city or area and show off its culture. Because of this, a new mural that has appeared in the heart of Philadelphia has divided locals.

Here, it shows an advert for five below. In essence, although this is technically a well-designed piece of art, it is still a corporate advert. Due to this, some have claimed that this goes against the heart and soul of what makes a mural. The image below shows a mural for Five Below, which is a store that specializes in budget products.

The image was originally uploaded to Reddit and in fairness to Five Below, they are originally based in Philadelphia, meaning that this mural is based near their headquarters. Reacting to the mural, one user wrote: “I’d much rather see a corporation pay an artist to paint a mural on a building than pay another third party advertising firm to put up a billboard on 95. Honestly I hope this catches on.” However, another user wrote: “I know it’s still a work by an artist. But it feels against the grain of mural art.”

Irrespective of your views on corporate murals, it looks like this one is here to stay and it won’t be the first or last advert either.
