Iconic Modesto Restaurant Building listed for sale

One of the most renowned burger establishments from the American Graffiti era in the city is currently up for sale. The longstanding proprietors of the downtown A&W drive-in, situated at the intersection of G and 14th streets, have decided to put the restaurant on the market after being in ownership for several decades.

Since 1996, Johnny and Tammy Matthews have managed the eatery, which has gained fame for its substantial burgers, overflowing root beer floats, live Elvis performances, and roller-skating waitstaff. As the fourth owners of this establishment since it first opened over six decades ago, the Matthews have served as custodians of its rich history. However, after operating this beloved spot for 27 years and preserving its legacy, Johnny Matthews has made the choice to retire.

The Matthews’ decision to sell, as they possess both the building and the restaurant, stemmed from the expiration of their franchise agreement in June. Company representatives informed them that renewing the agreement for another 20 years would have Johnny working until he was 95 years old. Additionally, renewing the franchise would necessitate investing a minimum of $200,000 in upgrades and renovations.

Originally established as a food stand in 1957, Modesto’s A&W Root Beer Drive-In initially gained recognition for its 5-cent beverages, 25-cent hot dogs, and speedy, courteous service, as advertised in a March 1958 Modesto Bee promotion celebrating its grand opening. On the same newspaper page, there were advertisements for the Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich film Witness for the Prosecution at the State Theatre, as well as Polaroid’s 10th-anniversary sale at Rogers Jewelry Co.

Throughout the years, the restaurant has also attracted international visitors, many of whom discovered it through guidebooks referencing Modesto as the hometown of American Graffiti and Star Wars creator George Lucas. Johnny Matthews mentioned that he once maintained a guestbook for people to sign, but lost count of the number of countries represented. In 2015, the restaurant even hosted a wedding with an Elvis theme, featuring six impersonators serenading the joyful couple.

For now, a ‘for sale’ sign sits out this iconic restaurant and only time will tell what eventually happens to it.
