New sightings of Lanternflies in Tennessee – With warning that they could soon be in Nashville

A recent discovery by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) reveals the presence of a spotted lanternfly (SLF) in Davidson County. This invasive species, initially identified in Pennsylvania in 2014, has now been identified in Tennessee, making it the 16th state to detect this pest. With this in mind, there are concerns that this ivasive pest could soon be found in Nashville.

The SLF is a problematic invasive insect that can cover significant distances by hitching rides on infested materials or objects containing their egg masses, often facilitated by human movement and vehicles. As described by the TDA, these insects, as adults, typically emerge in late summer or early fall, measuring approximately one inch in length and half an inch in width, with distinctive wings. Their preferred host is the Tree of Heaven, but they also display a penchant for grape vines and fruit trees. Additionally, they may infest other tree species such as black walnut, maple, and yellow-poplar.

Infested trees can exhibit various signs of damage, including wilting, defoliation, dieback, yield reduction, and, in severe cases, death. Both SLF adults and nymphs tend to congregate in large numbers on their host plants while feeding on essential nutrients and water. The insects lay their eggs on the trunks of host plants and other flat surfaces.

To address this issue, the TDA recommends the following steps:

  1. If you encounter an SLF or an egg mass, document the sighting by taking photographs. Then, complete the reporting form available on the Protect Tennessee Forests website.
  2. Subsequently, take measures to eliminate the insects and destroy their egg masses. This can be achieved by either crushing or dousing them with rubbing alcohol.
  3. It’s also important to inspect vehicles, boats, or campers to ensure they are not inadvertently transporting these insects or their eggs, as they can easily travel in this manner.
