First founded in 2011, SomaR bar has been serving Oakland locals for well over a decade. Last night, it permanently closed and served its last ever pint. Although its closure wasn’t covered much in the media, it was announced on social media in a post that read: “SomaR Bar will serve the community one last time tonight. The Town is heartbroken but we understand the current realities and how tough it is. Thank you for toughing it out for so so long and always looking to support the local DJ culture, community based organizations, and the people! The community love SOMAR exuded from day one will never be forgotten and was mirrored back a 1000 fold.” The full post can be seen in more detail below.

Although not directly mentioned, the above post alluded to tough financial conditions that many bars and restaurants have faced recently while operating in Oakland and across the USA. In their own Instagram post, SomaR had this to say: “After 14 years, Somar is stopping its cabaret. With the overall slow in business we have made the decision from being a part time “club” to transitioning to a full time cocktail lounge.” With this said, it may be a goodbye from SomaR as we know it but it looks like it may return in a temporary capacity.
