Image shows the extent of Jacksonville flooding with car submerged in water

Yesterday’s rain hit Jacksonville hard. One car was unfortunate enough to get caught up in the eye of the storm as it was submerged in the rainwater. Interestingly, just meters away a number of cars were sitting safe which shows just how quickly the water became deep. In a cruel twist of fate, a street sign was also in the shot that read ‘car pool’. In yesterday’s case, that’s literally what it was.

The image was shared on Reddit which prompted a discussion on the recent flooding. Here, one user wrote: “(There was an) easy 1-2 inches of rain fell in 20-30 minutes off Atlantic and Kernan. The amount that fell over a five minute span was unbelievable really, more like a constant falling river than actual raindrops.”

Due to the severity of the weather, a Flood Watch has been declared for the coastal areas of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, as additional isolated rainfall events are anticipated for today. Notably, Jacksonville managed to completely erase its precipitation shortfall for the month in yesterday’s downpour.

Consequently, flooding led to the closure of a segment of the Arlington Expressway during the afternoon commute. As expected, there are forecasts for the formation of showers and thunderstorms once more today. The primary concerns include substantial rainfall and lightning, with the possibility of localized flooding resulting from the substantial rainfall experienced yesterday.
