Chinese eatery closes after nearly 4 decades of business

You might have come across the announcement posted earlier this month: Nam Fong ended its business operations on Sunday, September 24. Perhaps, the most iconic images associated with Nam Fong are those succulent slabs of char siu and roast duck hanging in its window. This establishment holds a special place in the heart of Chinatown, cherished for its traditional, unpretentious, and time-honored presence.

The proprietor, Kim Chiu Tsun, who also responds to the name Dylan Tsun, bid farewell to the shop after dedicating 35 years of his life to its ownership. Originally hailing from Hong Kong, he introduced Nam Fong in 1988, employing the roasting techniques passed down to him by his father, a tradition he started learning at the tender age of 14.

As market prices continue to rise and business prospects dwindle, it’s no surprise that Tsun is embracing retirement. With both his son and daughter now married and leading independent lives, he feels it’s the right moment to hang up his apron and embark on a journey of exploration. Currently, there is no prospective buyer for the property, so it’s likely to remain vacant for some time following the restaurant’s closure.

Due to the extended notice of the closure, many patrons have been flocking in, causing items to sell out as early as 11 a.m. or even sooner.
