Target announced on Tuesday its intention to shutter three of its Bay Area outlets next month. The decision comes as a response to concerns about “theft and organized retail crime,” which the company believes pose significant threats to the safety of its employees and customers, as well as adversely impacting its business performance.

In an official statement, they wrote: “In this case, we cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance. We know that our stores serve an important role in their communities, but we can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for all.”

This move includes the closure of the San Francisco store situated on Folsom and 13th streets, the Oakland store on Broadway and 27th Street, and the Pittsburg store on Century Boulevard. Target has clarified that it will maintain operations at 32 other stores within the Bay Area. Furthermore, in addition to the aforementioned Bay Area closures, Target has also announced its plan to shut down a total of six stores in New York City, Seattle, and Portland. Similarly, these cities have also been publicized for their retail crime over recent years.
