A recent video on YouTube captured a homeless encampment forming near Diamond Head Road. Here, various makeshift tents were seen formed off the path and were filmed from above by a drone. Over the past few years, Hawaii’s homeless population has risen massively. Nonetheless, until recently it was not known that there was an encampment in this area. It should be noted that there have been homeless groups in this area before but this was many years ago.

This also shows a different kind of homeless demographic, as the commune is away from the typical urban areas that are closer to the city. The video was uploaded to YouTube earlier today and so far has racked up hundreds of views.

Here, one user wrote: “I think I’d be okay with their presence EXCEPT I’ve personally noticed increased trash, questionable characters riding vehicles in and out of the area, and worst of all open fires coming through. I’ve walked through the encampment once and felt pretty unsafe. I also noticed a fair bit of narcotic remnants in the area.”

Whether this encampment actually progresses into something bigger remains to be seen. For now at least, it looks like the situation is just starting to develop.
