Cruise cars spotted around Dallas as driverless vehicles edge closer

Recently, you may have started seeing more and more Cruise cars driving around Dallas. These have been sighted a lot downtown and there is a reason why. In short, the reason is that these cars are currently mapping the city streets to create routes for the future. When this mapping phase is complete, the next phase will be the introduction of driverless cars in the city. This is already the case in San Francisco which has used Waymo cars for a while now.

The image below was shared on the website Reddit, where a number of locals confirmed that they had also seen more of these cars lately. Put simply, autonomous cars are not far away from becoming a reality in Dallas. On a separate note, this may spell bad news for Lyft and Uber drivers around the city.

Cruise, a self-driving car venture that commenced operations in 2013, became part of General Motors through an acquisition in 2016. Recently, it initiated its autonomous taxi service in Austin and reports covering nearly 2 million miles without human drivers in San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix.

Starting in January last year, Cruise introduced its “fully autonomous service” in robotaxis for the general public in San Francisco. If you’re eager to be among the early riders of a Cruise robotaxi in Dallas, the company is prepared to accommodate you. You can sign up for a waiting list by visiting this link.
