A long-standing fixture in the Downtown dining scene has chosen to end its culinary journey. For over four decades, Mandarin Gourmet has been a cherished purveyor of Chinese cuisine on Wood Street in Downtown Pittsburgh, but it will be closing its doors at the conclusion of September.

As stated in an Instagram announcement, the closure of Mandarin Gourmet is a voluntary decision and not the result of an eviction. Based on this and the age of the restaurant, it could be that the owner finally decided to retire.

This establishment is situated on the ground floor of the YWCA building and enjoys popularity among Point Park University students, given its close proximity to the Point Park campus. It is renowned for serving generous portions of classic Chinese-American dishes.

Over the years, Mandarin Gourmet had received positive reviews from the Pittsburgh community and was often viewed as one of the city’s best restaurants when it came to Asian cuisine. It is understandable then, that locals were naturally upset to hear of its closing.

Mandarin Gourmet even had a moment in the spotlight, making an appearance in the Fred Rogers movie “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” featuring Tom Hanks. The restaurant’s final day of operation is slated for September 29th. Until then, it’s business as usual. At this moment in time, it is unknown what establishment will replace Mandarin Gourmet.
