Today, an image was posted on Reddit of a large sign. This had a picture of a dog (which looked like a husky breed). Next to this image read: ‘The choice is clear! Write in Meiko for mayor 24!’ Aside from this, the poster had no other information available. Because of this, it is safe to assume that this is a joke and it is unknown at this point as to whether a dog has actually been put in for the 2024 mayor race.

Interestingly, if Meiko got elected then this wouldn’t be the first time that a dog has become a mayor either. Back in 2013, a dog named Mayor Max II became the mayor of the town Idyllwild–Pine Cove in California. Having said this, it’s fair to claim that Anchorage is a bit more serious when it comes to politics compared to a small Californian town.

Reacting to the news on Reddit, one user commented: “Why in God’s name would anyone do this in an election that has real implications for the future of the city? This isn’t Talkeetna.” Elsewhere, another user wrote: “Cute dog, but only slightly more qualified than the current occupant of the office.”

The next Regular Municipal Election is April 2, 2024 so it may be that Meiko’s campaign trail is only beginning. If this is the case, then it will be interesting to see how far Meiko can go as a serious candidate. Historically, protest characters rarely do well but do garner attention in the meantime. So, if you’re sick and tired of politics in Anchorage then Meiko could be your mayor of choice who could lead to genuine change in the region.
