One of Grand Rapids’ most famous parks recently got a makeover. Here, Cherry Park had some much-needed TLC and is now ready for its grand opening on Thursday, September 14th. This was also accompanied by a large sign that outlined the improvements and new features added to the park.

So, what was improved upon? Firstly, the basketball court and tennis court have been re-paved with new flooring. There is also some good news for pickleball fans too as it includes markings for a pickleball court. In recent times, this niche sport has exploded in popularity so it’s not surprising to see a court added to Cherry Park. Having said this, there is no date in sight for when the pickleball court will come to life.

Cherry Park came into existence in 1911, following the actions of the Playground Association of Grand Rapids, spearheaded by Charles Garfield. This organization achieved the approval of a $200,000 bond issue to finance the acquisition of land for various parks across the urban area.

Since then, it has long been associated with sports and recreation. However, in recent years it has looked a bit worn and dated. Hence, the reason for the update has breathed new life into the park which is great news for local sports enthusiasts.
