Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum announces temporary closure due to climate activists

For the second time this year, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum decided to close its doors early due to concerns surrounding a climate protest within its historic Fenway establishment.

On Thursday, the museum made the announcement that it would be closing early, thereby canceling its regularly scheduled evening of free admission, in response to information about an upcoming biodiversity protest organized by Extinction Rebellion. The museum intends to resume its regular operating hours the following day, as stated in their official announcement. Additionally, visitors who had previously reserved tickets for the affected evening will have the option to obtain a complimentary voucher for a future visit.

At the Gardner Museum, famously known for being the location of one of the world’s most significant art heists, the protestors had planned to display art within empty frames in the museum’s Dutch Room. Their aim was to raise awareness regarding the ongoing issue of biodiversity loss, as outlined on the website of the Boston chapter of Extinction Rebellion.

It’s worth noting that these activists had previously scheduled a climate protest at the Gardner Museum back in March, but those plans were thwarted when the museum caught wind of the impending demonstration.

Over the past year, climate activists affiliated with Extinction Rebellion and various other environmental organizations have staged protests at art museums worldwide, all with the intention of drawing attention to their cause. In London, activists resorted to throwing tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.” In Madrid and Melbourne, they employed adhesive tactics to attach their hands to renowned paintings, while in Potsdam, Germany, activists chose to toss mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet masterpiece.
