Cedar Rapids Animal Care temporarily closes after wave of new critters

For the consecutive second day, the Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control shelter has announced its temporary closure. Initially, the shelter declared its closure on Thursday due to an unexpected surge in new animals arriving at their facility. This closure extended into Friday as they experienced a significant influx of animals.

Cedar Rapids Police reported a domestic incident on Wednesday that led to the removal of approximately 25 diverse animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, a rabbit, and a reptile. The substantial task of processing and providing proper accommodations to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals demanded the complete attention of the staff. Consequently, the shelter had to temporarily close its doors to the public. Having said this, the closure is not expected to last much longer and is more of a processing issue rather than anything more long-term or serious.

The investigation into the domestic incident that occurred on Wednesday is still ongoing, as confirmed by the authorities. It is expected that the shelter will resume full operations by Saturday. As always, this is a timely reminder that many animals in Iowa need adoption. With this in mind, if you know of anyone willing to adopt, then please put them in touch with the Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control shelter.
