DeSantis meets hecklers during Iowa bus tour

Ron DeSantis embarked on a less-than-auspicious start to his six-stop bus tour, as it kicked off on Friday. During his initial event of the day, situated approximately 40 miles west of Des Moines, the Florida governor was met with disruption from two women brandishing cowbells and a bullhorn.

As DeSantis disembarked from his campaign bus at Menlo, Iowa’s Freedom Rock—a boulder adorned with patriotic artwork—the women, vociferously protesting his policies on L.G.B.T.Q. matters, gender identity, and education, launched into chants of disapproval. In a synchronized outcry, they urged him to return to Florida with the refrain, “Go back to Florida.”

Their rallying cries, which included the chant “Racist, fascist, anti-gay, Ron DeSantis, go away,” drowned out much of the governor’s speech. Amidst the commotion, a minor altercation unfolded between one of the women and a male attendee who had come to greet DeSantis. The governor’s team and local law enforcement swiftly intervened to separate them.

The ongoing disruption prompted DeSantis’s aides to swiftly relocate journalists away from the scene to a waiting travel van, thereby obscuring much of the governor’s remarks. As DeSantis will also be at the upcoming Iowa fair over the next few days, it is not known whether he will be heckled again at some point.
