Iowans report fewer mosquitos than previous summer months

Recently, Iowans took to the news site Reddit to discuss the lack of mosquitos in the state compared to previous years. Here, several users claimed that these pests weren’t as common compared to other summer months, which can only be seen as a good thing.

The reasons for this included a lack of rain, smoke and other ideas. However, as this is merely a public forum, these ideas should not be treated as fact. Nonetheless, this didn’t stop one user from writing, “I haven’t seen, heard or felt any skeeters in SE Iowa City either, and live next to a creek, which usually is a good breeding ground.”

Not only this, but others reported that there had been a lack of mosquitos over the past few years in general, and this year wasn’t just a one-off.

Interestingly though, despite mosquitos being highly annoying, this may spell bigger issues when it comes to climate change. This is because the lack of mosquitos may prove that the volatile weather has proven too much for certain insects and animals, which could affect the local equilibrium of the environment in Iowa.

Irrespective of this, we’re still only a few months into the summer and with August just days away, we could still see an influx of mosquitos, especially if there is heavy rainfall which is expected.
