Sportello Restaurant abruptly closes – And here’s why

January 7, 2024 by No Comments

Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Barbara Lynch announced on January 5th that her Italian restaurant, Sportello is closing its doors for good. Located on bustling Congress Street in the heart of Fort Point, Sportello had been a cornerstone of Boston’s dining scene for decades.

Lynch, whose restaurant group faced public scrutiny last year following allegations of staff harassment had become a notable figure in the Boston food scene over the past few years.

In a press release, Lynch cited soaring rent costs and unsuccessful negotiations with the landlord as the primary reasons for the closure. Sportello, like many small businesses across the country, found it increasingly difficult to sustain its operations amidst significant rent increases.

Sportello closed for good on January 5th and left a note on its window saying: ‘It is with deep regret and sadness that we write to inform you that Sportello has ceased operations effective today. The lingering economic impacts from the pandemic proved difficult, but the greatest challenge has been the unsustainable rent rates. We apologize to all of you for any inconvenience. Sportello management.’

Beyond the Italian fare and vibrant atmosphere, Sportello had cultivated a loyal following through its dedication to community and support for local farmers. The restaurant was known for its commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients and its welcoming environment.
