There’s been a stir in Lebanon regarding a newly proposed after-school club at an elementary school. Known as the ‘Satan Club,’ it is slated to start next month and has sparked discussion among parents. However, the organizers clarify that the club’s focus is different from what some might assume.

June Everett, the campaign director of the temple’s after-school program, explains that they interpret Satan symbolically as a literary character, rather than a religious figure. She mentioned that the initiation of the club came in response to a request from a parent and has recently received the green light from the district.

Contrary to what some might think, the club’s activities won’t revolve around religion. Everett points out that the program is designed to engage children in activities centered on science and rational thinking, fostering empathy and acceptance toward all beings. The goal is also to address and correct any misconceptions.

This development traces back to a 2001 Supreme Court decision (Good News Club v. Milford Central School), which allowed an evangelical Christian group, the Good News Club, to use school facilities after hours. Currently, Lebanon Elementary School hosts weekly meetings of the Good News Club.

The After School Satan Club is scheduled to commence operations next month. So far, the temple reports that five students have enrolled in the club.
