Local business targeted during anti-Israel protest

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Center City and University City to express their solidarity with Gaza and call for a lasting ceasefire. This ongoing series of local demonstrations seeks to highlight the ongoing conflict and its repercussions. Unlike previous protests, this one was largely condemned by Philadelphians for aiming its rhetoric toward a Jewish business.

Some local businesses, including Goldie, a Jewish falafel shop in the Center City, drew criticism from protesters. Chants declaring Goldie’s complicity in genocide echoed through the streets. The targeting of Goldie was caught on video on Twitter. Here, protesters were seen chanting: “Goldie, Goldie you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide.”

The same user then went on to write: “To clarify, I witnessed them placing stickers on the front door & windows of the restaurant. I just walked by – “Free Palestine” & “This is Genocide” (serving falafel?) stickers plastered out front.”

News of this protest also spread across Twitter where it was largely condemned for targeting Goldies, which is a local business that sells foods such as falafel. Here, some even went as far as to claim that the Philadelphia police should have at least been present in case things turned ugly. Nonetheless, this was not the case as the march was allowed to continue in full swing.
