New study shows Jacksonville ranks No. 1 for deadly DUIs

Jacksonville stands out as a city with a particularly concerning driving safety record, earning the unfortunate distinction of being ranked as the most perilous place for DUI-related fatalities in a recent study. The statistics cited in this report stem from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Action News Jax’s Meghan Moriarty has meticulously examined this data, uncovering a troubling pattern that warrants the attention of all drivers.

The familiar adage “Arrive Alive, Don’t Drink and Drive” serves as a poignant reminder of the potential life-threatening consequences of impaired driving. In the context of Jacksonville, the statistics reveal a sobering reality – we hold the unenviable top spot among the 100 most populous cities in the United States for fatal DUI incidents, based on data sourced from the NHTSA and collated by Sellmax. Although the data covers the period from 2017 to 2021, it tells a story of Jacksonville’s increasing vulnerability to such incidents. Notably, from 2019 to 2020, our city experienced a staggering doubling of deadly DUI crashes, soaring from 20 occurrences in the previous year to a distressing 46 in 2020.

This alarming ranking can be attributed to the disproportionate number of DUI-related fatalities relative to our population. With this in mind, we can only hope that these numbers aren’t the same for next year and hopefully Jacksonville’s driving culture changes massively.
