Governor Kay Ivey blasted for ‘book banning’ during photo op

September 22, 2023 by No Comments

Earlier this week, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey visited two elementary schools in Birmingham. Here, she spoke to students and even participated in reading a few books. She captioned this post on Instagram by writing: “I’m seeing it firsthand — Alabama students are eager to learn. This morning, I was greeted with a warm welcome from both Charles A. Brown and Hemphill Elementary in Birmingham. I stopped by to encourage our students to keep up the hard work and to keep picking up books.”

Despite her best efforts at showing good PR, not everyone saw it this way and comments quickly descended into criticism.

Here, one user named Timmy replied by saying: “What are you doing to actually make this state better? A state cookie and a Hank Williams holiday do absolutely nothing. That’s what you’re best at, doing nothing, so keep up the good work. Retire.”

Similarly, another Instagram user wrote: “Book banning is going on. Do not let this photo op fool you.” These weren’t the only criticisms aimed towards Ivey either. Whether you’re a fan or a critic of Ivey and her political views, it does look like this photo op was badly timed in terms of context. Having said this, it looks as though the majority are still behind here, seeing as she was voted in after all, and will serve in the state until 2027.
