The unanimous decision of the CARTA Board of Directors on Thursday was to implement a citywide increase in on-street parking meter rates to $1.50 per hour, effective October 1.

Since the last rate adjustment in 2015, meter rates had remained fixed at $1 per hour.

Corey Evatt, a board member who spearheaded the rate assessment alongside CARTA staff, noted that the standard rate for cities comparable in size to Chattanooga is $1.72. The analysis encompassed 19 cities, including Knoxville, Savannah, GA, and St. Louis, MO.

The newly established citywide rate serves as a baseline, with Mr. Evatt explaining that further analysis will enable CARTA to identify high-traffic areas where rates as high as $2 per hour, a limit authorized by the City Council, could be implemented. He also mentioned that CARTA plans to utilize the Parkmobile parking payment app to adjust rates based on the day of the week or time of day.

It’s important to note that the revenue generated from these meters exclusively supports CARTA-owned parking lots and shuttle services.

Additionally, commencing on October 1, CARTA will commence charging for on-street parking on West Main Street, extending from Chestnut Street. Payment for these 200 parking spots can be made through the Parkmobile app or by scanning the barcode and using an alternative application.
