Hy Vee plans two new Illinois locations

Hy-Vee, the grocery chain based in Iowa, is currently in the process of pursuing the acquisition of two County Market locations. These locations are situated at 827 Veterans Ave. in Vandalia, Illinois, and 1255 W. Morton Ave. in Jacksonville, Illinois.

The Vandalia site comprises both a County Market grocery store and an Ace Hardware store. Public records indicate that Tom Harmon, a resident of Springfield, Illinois, is the owner of both County Market outlets in Vandalia and Jacksonville.

Hy-Vee is a supermarket chain owned by its employees and operates an extensive network of over 285 retail stores across eight Midwestern states. While the company currently operates nearly 50 stores in Missouri and Illinois, none of them are located in the St. Louis area.

However, the proposed acquisitions by Hy-Vee would bring this out-of-state grocery retailer, which has stores spanning from Columbia, Missouri, to Springfield, Illinois, closer to the St. Louis region. Vandalia is situated 70 miles northeast of St. Louis, and Jacksonville is 85 miles to the north. This marks a recent trend of out-of-state grocery chains expanding into or near the St. Louis region, which has traditionally been dominated, and until recently led, by locally-owned and family-operated grocery brands such as Schnuck Markets Inc. and Dierberg Markets.

The news of Hy-Vee’s intended acquisitions comes on the heels of Meijer Inc., a big-box retailer, announcing its plans to simultaneously construct two stores in the St. Louis area.

Hy-Vee earned the 36th spot on Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of the top 100 food retailers in North America, boasting fiscal year-end sales of nearly $12.8 billion.
