If you’ve ever wondered about the story behind the dead trees on 2nd Street then here’s the reason why

If you’ve been around the park on 2nd Street in Albuquerque then you may have noticed an array of dead trees. Although Halloween isn’t far away, this isn’t some kind of city initiative for spooky season. Instead, the reason is actually quite sad and it may surprise you.

In short, there is an absence of tree bark encircling the trunks. The bark plays a vital role in transporting water to the upper branches. When people removed the bark in a circular manner from these trees, it’s akin to severely harming the tree’s lifeline. If you go for a stroll in the park, you will observe that almost all the trees bore wounds in the form of these circular cuts. Some trees appear to be barely surviving.

In the past, there was a significant homeless encampment in the area, and the water supply to the trees was shut off when homeless individuals began using it. However, it would take many years of water deprivation to cause such extensive harm to mature trees like these. It is a possibility that the dead bark was a result of the ropes holding up the tents and tarps.

In other words, these dying trees are a result of people stripping off their bark and the city removing irrigation. Unfortunately, it is not known whether the trees will ever return to their former glory or whether they will slowly perish. In the meantime, they are certainly eye-catching but perhaps for the wrong reasons.
