Established Oakland bookshop goes up for sale

A quirky Oakland bookshop has just gone up for sale. The Owl & Company bookstore has been operating in Oakland since 2011 and is one of the oldest bookshops in the city. For reasons unknown, they are now trying to sell the business. This is written on their website which reads: ‘The purchaser would take over this beautiful independent bookstore and its full stock of new and used books including rare occult volumes, antique sets, and hard-to-find collections.’

As well as the physical store, it also includes an online shop that sells on eBay. This may be quite an important part of the business due to the ability to sell further afield. According to this section of the website, it also has below-market rent.

It is not known how much the owner wants for the business as well. However, due to the amount of inventory and the location, you would imagine that it may be quite pricey. Furthermore, there is also the lease to figure out which may be a separate negotiation with the owner of the building.

Overall, it will be interesting to see how this sale pans out. Even more intriguingly, if this store doesn’t get a buyer then the question remains whether the shop will close. Right now, this bookshop looks like it’s nearing the end of its story but the final chapter is not quite over.
