Orlando abortion clinic avoids closure after raising over $200,000

This week, the Center of Orlando for Women (OWC) met its target goal to stay open. Originally, this number was at $193,000 however it currently stands at over $215,000 which shows that its donors were incredibly generous. In short, the abortion clinic faced closure after receiving heavy fines from the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA).

It was deemed by AHCA that this clinic had performed 193 abortions that violated Florida law. What followed was a fine of $1000 per violated abortion, amounting to a $193,000 fine. This is where the number was thought of for the fundraiser.

The fundraiser was put forth by a group named Stand With Abortion Now (SWAN) who wrote this during their request: “Since the Dobbs decision in 2022, Florida has been a haven for abortion seekers in ban states. As clinic escorts that provide full volunteer defender coverage, we have seen an increase in out-of-state license plates on our patients’ vehicles. Like many clinics, staff at our clinic work hard and diligently every day to provide care to clients. They deserve to have a job, our patients deserve care, and abortion rights opponents deserve a defeat.”

On the tab to the right of the donations page, users from across the country and abroad paid various amounts ranging from $5 to $50 and beyond. Here, they complimented the abortion clinic’s efforts. Had the fundraiser not been successful then this abortion clinic would have almost certainly faced closure.
