Rare sighting of Coyote in Baltimore

Yesterday, a Baltimore resident was shocked to find a wild coyote chasing deer at Forrest Park golf course around 7pm. Here, they asked the internet whether it was a coyote, as these sightings are very rare in Baltimore and surrounding cities.

It turns out that this is indeed a coyote and they have actually lived in Baltimore since 1972. This has been confirmed on the official Maryland website which says that: “Coyotes are a relatively new addition to local ecosystems and were first documented in Maryland in 1972. Initial substantiated sightings occurred in Cecil, Frederick, and Washington counties. Since that time, population densities and occupied range have expanded incrementally and coyotes now occur statewide.”

While seeing a coyote in broad daylight is very rare in Baltimore, there have been several recorded cases over the years. Typically, most coyotes in the area are captured on camera in the dead of night when it is safer for them to hunt without human interference. Furthermore, there have even been tales of coyotes attacking pets in the city as well.

This shows that even in Baltimore, your pets may not always be safe from predators. At the same time, we should point out that this is highly uncommon and is not really worth worrying about. Still, as seen with the above example regarding the deer, if a coyote is around then it is best to stay vigilant.
