The mask mandate in place for students and staff in Muscatine’s K through 6th grade schools has been removed effective Wednesday.

The Muscatine Journal reports the School Board voted 5-2 to remove the mandate during its Monday meeting, with one of the “nay” votes coming from a member who wanted the lifting of the mandate to start after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Although masks are no longer required, the district will continue to strongly encourage the use of face-coverings by all students. They’re still required to wear masks on the school bus or other school district-provided transportation.

School Superintendent Clint Christopher said there were only six currently active COVID-19 cases in the district, five of which were in the elementary schools.
