Scammers always be scamming. They are now running scams to steal stimulus payments.
They are sending text messages, emails or making calls pretending to be government employees and attempting to steal personal information or talk a target into sending them money.
The IRS will not contact anyone by phone, email, text message or social media with information about stimulus payments. Nor will IRS personnel ask you for Social Security numbers, bank accounts or a government benefits debit card account number. Anyone who does is a scammer phishing for information.
The Marshalltown Police Department advises residents to use caution when communicating with anyone online or on the phone. If it sounds to good to be true…it is. If it sounds weird…it is.
