OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a man who was shot to death last week after breaking into a rural home near Ottumwa.
Aaron Thompson, 28, of Brookfield, Wisconsin, was shot by a homeowner after he broke into the home Thursday night and fought with the homeowner, the Ottumwa Courier reported. Thompson was flown by helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he died.
The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office said Thompson appeared to have been suffering from a mental health crisis at the time he broke into the home, noting that witnesses reported Thompson acting erratically earlier in the day and yelling unintelligibly after having crashed his car near the home.
Officials said no criminal charges would be filed against the homeowner.
“The lack of criminal charges do not take away the fact that this was the most unfortunate event possible,” Sheriff Don Phillips said in a written release. “Mr. Aaron Thompson was clearly a successful young man with a bright future. Unfortunately, mental health can affect anyone and appears to have played a significant role in this chain of events.”
