Many shoppers will forego the bustle and risk of Black Friday shopping this season, but the ninth annual Shop Small Saturday in Marshalltown is another opportunity to find unique gifts for the holidays.

Shop Small Saturday, taking place tomorrow, is an annual event where the focus shifts to local businesses. Many participating businesses offer special discounts and all of them offer a chance to win $20 in Chamber Bucks from the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber executive director Lynn Olberding said each business is implementing its own guidelines to make sure shoppers and employees are safe.

“If you’re not comfortable shopping in stores or dining in restaurants this holiday season, there are other ways to show your support: curbside pick-up or delivery, purchase a gift card, follow their social media pages, like and share Facebook posts, and tell your friends,” Olberding said.

There is a wide variety among the 28 local shopping spots participating this year. Shoppers will find stores specializing in electronics, shoes, clothes furniture, antiques and more. There are also services such as eateries and salons taking part in the day full of deals.

Whether you have a gift idea in mind or want to stuff stockings with gift cards, the options are wide open based on the chamber’s list of Shop Small Saturday businesses.

“We know that people want to support our local businesses this holiday season and we are so thankful for the spirit of community Marshalltown is showing our local business community,” she said. “Shop Small Saturday is a way to highlight our locally-owned and operated businesses during the busy post-Thanksgiving weekend shopping.”
